Genre hating is retarded. Genres are useful. If I wanted to find a band like Nasum I’d be better off searching ‘deathgrind’ (which is what they are, not death metal, not grindcore) than I would ‘metal’ or ‘punk’. Making up false genres just to attack them (“bob the buildercore”) is just as retarded. I bet many of you found Nasum through searching for ‘death metal’ or ‘grindcore’, so get fucked, man.
Support for deathgrind over death metal or grindcore: 1) they’re fast as fuck and the vocalist primarily screams. 2) the songs are shorter than standard death metal. 3) it’s technical like death metal. 4) the guitar tone is too ‘clean’ for death metal. 5) it sounds more like early Napalm Death than early Death (grindcore vs. death metal).
And finally, -core is an epidemic. Deathcore bands, also known as shitcore bands (Whitechapel, Suicide Silence, Emmure), are popular. Every band that is fast and heavy is being called deathcore. I’ve seen some idiot call Suffocation ‘the first deathcore band’. Grindcore, on the other hand, is really good: take away Nasum and there’s still early Napalm Death, the deathgrind of later Napalm Death and Brutal Truth, and the goregrind of early Carcass. School’d.
@aSpoonfedTribe Just because Suffocation includes a lot of breakdowns, it doesn´t mean they are Deathcore. And I agree with you, most of the core bands (not all) are shit.
